ill-contained

a solo exhibition by Stephanie Sherwood

Pierce College Art Gallery, Woodland Hills, CA

November 13 - December 12, 2022

Launching beyond her traditional roots of 2D painting and drawing, the artist has taken to the streets (and alleyways) to surreptitiously paint her signature imagery on derelict furniture where it stands. After documenting the ephemeral results, the cast-off objects eventually make their way to their intended destination, the landfill.

In a site-specific installation, Sherwood brings her nomadic impulses to the white box: lush and suggestive forms, simultaneously deliberate and random, a marriage of urban detritus and performative spontaneity.

A long-time resident of Los Angeles with a multi-cultural background, Sherwood graduated from California State University, Long Beach, and studied at Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in China in 2010-11. She has shown at Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery, LA Artcore, The Brand Library, DAC Gallery and Highways Performance Space as well as nationally and internationally.
