Call and Response at the Startup Art Fair | Shoebox Arts
Call and Response is a global collaborative art program founded by Kristine Schomaker of Shoebox Arts in Los Angeles. Born during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the project randomly pairs artists from around the world to create work together — no fees, no applications, no gatekeepers. Just two artists and the question: what can we make together that neither of us could make alone?
Over five years and 20+ rounds, Call and Response has connected more than 500 artists across six continents, building real friendships, lasting creative partnerships, and a community of artists who show up for each other.
This video was filmed at the Startup Art Fair in Venice Beach, California — the first-ever in-person edition of Call and Response. Nearly 190 artists from around the world created 90+ handmade collaborative artist books, from accordion folds and oracle decks to teabag weavings and haiku postcards in cigar boxes. Work traveled to California from across the globe, and an incredible community of artist volunteers showed up to make it all happen — unpacking, building, setting up, talking with visitors, and tearing it all back down again.
