JONICONIAN: Relics of an Unborn Kingdom
Solo Exhibition by Naoki Koide
Tomio Koyama Gallery, Tokyo, Japan
May 20 - June 17, 2023
Welcome to another exciting video in our series exploring the vibrant contemporary art scene in Tokyo, Japan! Today, we're thrilled to present "JONICONIAN: Relics of an Unborn Kingdom," Naoki Koide's sixth solo exhibition at the Tomio Koyama Gallery.
Naoki Koide, a talented artist born in Aichi prefecture in 1968, has a rich artistic journey that began with sculptures using materials made from synthetic resin as well as glass fiber and wood, and later evolved to include captivating photographic works. In 2010, during his artist residency at the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park, Koide found a profound connection with ceramics.
This exhibition showcases his masterful use of ceramics, a medium that allows him to express his feelings and thoughts with a sense of contemplation and reflection. Koide's artworks are deeply personal, often capturing pivotal moments in his life, including the loss of his mother, the joys of marriage and parenthood, and the connections he cherishes with his loved ones. Through a touch of whimsy and surrealism, he transforms familiar figures into dream-like beings, transcending time and space with a heartwarming and enchanting charm. The term "JONICONIAN," coined by Koide, represents an imaginary era that exists only within his artistic realm. "Relics of an Unborn Kingdom" delves into a world of fiction and fantasy, a place meant to be experienced and interpreted individually, free from the constraints of reality. In his latest creations, Koide fearlessly bares his soul, crafting monumental artworks inspired by the idea of sacred relics.
