The Ellsworth Artist Residency program is dedicated to creating an accessible studio space for artists and is a dynamic opportunity for emerging artists to work and develop their visual art practice. The residency includes professional development opportunities including studio visits with curators, critics, scholars and artists as well as inclusion in a group exhibition in Art Share L.A.’s gallery. A selection committee, consisting of professionals in the field, including curators, scholars, and artists, reviews all the submitted applications.
Angel Cruz is a multidisciplinary artist, born in Oaxaca Mexico and raised in Los Angeles. His art represents his multicultural background and experiences as an indigenous artist raised in Los Angeles. Cruz's art always tells a story with the colors he uses, the typography he creates, or in the characters he inserts in the landscapes he captures in his photography. When Cruz first came into this country, he arrived with neither toys or documentation of where he belonged, crossing the border with hopes that everything would be better and safer. As an artist, now his medium is still paperless, digital, and his toys aren’t toys but dioramas. He strives to always grow from experiences, going through in his art journey and aiming to provide a message within his art for everyone to identify with. Inclusiveness and engagement is important to Cruz so that anyone who comes in contact with his art may understand it in their own way.
